Every message sits in the archive as an .eml file – readable in any mail program, even without Abalso Backup. Searchable by sender, subject and full text, and by attachment content if you want. The search index stays encrypted on your computer.

Yes. Abalso Backup keeps running in the menu bar when you close the window. On request it starts with the system. Scheduled backups then run in the background; it only speaks up if there is a problem.
Encrypted backups cannot be restored without the password – not even by us. That is precisely the point of the zero-knowledge principle. So keep the recovery kit that the app generates as a PDF: it holds the target, the access route and the password.
Yes. Restoring needs no existing job: connect the target, choose a snapshot, fetch the files. For encrypted backups you enter the password from the recovery kit.
Local and NAS backups are permanently free (free version) – with any number of jobs. Cloud and remote targets (S3, WebDAV, FTP, SFTP), encryption and retention come with Pro for a one-off €19.99 – for version 27, all version 27 updates included for one year, no subscription. If you have no storage of your own, take a cloud plan from €2 a month – Pro is already included there. You can try Pro free for 7 days beforehand; the free version you unlock at no cost.
The app checks for new versions at start-up, downloads them in the background and installs them on restart – signed and verified. You need not fetch anything by hand.
